Jae Raids the Drugstore: Best and Worst Beauty Buys
Wednesday, January 7, 2015
Ooh, the holidays weren't not kind to my bank account when it came to purchasing beauty products. I blame it on the fact that I was in stores so often. I tend to shop for myself whilst shopping for others. Like, I budget for it.
I was in Nordstrom buying a gift for my mom, and I bought the same thing for myself and the guy was like "Do you want these gift wrapped?" and I said "Sure... Oh wait just one because the other is for myself. That's how it goes, right? One for you, one for me?" It was my Cara tassel necklace, FYI, which is totally on sale now.
ANYWAY, here's some heroes and losers for beauty products over the last month or so. Some were life changing and the others got a resounding "ehhhhhh" from me.
Redken 05 Wind Blown (About $14)
K, so the left is my hair after it has been blow-dried and styled like always. Fine, but the right is after I blasted it with Wind Blown, which is a dry finishing spray with minimum hold. It's more of a volumizer and it just makes your hair look shampoo commercial pretty. I've also tried it with wavy hair and it's pretty fantastic. I just lift up my hair and spray it into little pockets here and there. Seriously. Love this stuff. Ignore the spotty mirror and just bask in the big-hairedness.
BASK IN IT!!!!
Urban Decay Naked Lip Gloss in Sesso ($20)
Burt's Bees Almond Milk Hand Creme ($9)
Speaking of Burt's Bees, I get super dry, cracked skin during the winter and this is the only stuff that can even touch it. Honestly, I put on other hand cream and it actually feels like I'm drying my skin out. This stuff is crazy thick and smells really clean (my husband always comments on how good it smells). I actually keep a jar in my car because for some reason, driving around in the cold is havoc on my hands.
Urban Decay Naked 24/7 Velvet Eyeliner in Stag ($20)

I have some long-term goals that I would like to meet, which will require taking a good, hard look at my budget. For that reason, I'm glad that you included e.l.f., which I'd written off awhile ago. Is it just me, or are their "essential" eyeshadows really chalky and come in childish colors?
I placed an order online for a few things on a whim, and I'm really glad that I did. Some things I can buy from the basic line, no problem--eyeliner, powder blush--but the Studio line is where it's at.
I was pleased with everything but my favorite so far has been the moisturizing lipstick, which comes in the prettiest shades possible.
I think my next shopping cart adventure will include a mascara and maybe even an eyeshadow palette, although so far my experience with palettes in general hasn't been great.
I wish we had some of these brands in the UK! I am currently using Smashbox Halo Powder and foundation. The foundation is good, a bit like Estee Lauder doublewear. But the powder, geez. I caught a glance of my face at lunchtime in the office and I look terrible! Shiny, oxidised and stuck in my pores which then looked mahoosive. I wouldn't care but the powder is the most expensive one I have ever tried, at £31.00 which I think is around $50.00. No bueno.
Avril, boo! I hate spending money on stuff that doesn't work, especially if it's supposed to be a high-end brand!
Nora, I've come to the conclusion that ELF excels in cream and liquid-based products. Their powder products aren't great, but like, liquid eyeliner and cream eyeshadow. Yes yes yes. And yeah, studio is fantastic. Literally the only concealer I ever wear.
I need to get some of that windblown stuff STAT! Big hair FTW!
Allison knows what's up!
Avril, I am outraged on your behalf. I hope wherever you bought it from has a good return policy!
Did you do anything different besides adding the Windblown??? Must get my hands on some of that!
Melanie, it was just wind blown sprayed into random pockets of hair and then finger styled. That's it. The stuff is sooo good.
